Alioune Sall

The Founder and Executive Director of the African Futures Institute, a Pan-African think-tank established in 2004, headquartered in Pretoria (South Africa) with a sub-regional office in Dakar (Senegal)
Prior to establishing the African Futures Institute, Alioune Sall has had a distinguished career in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The positions he has held at UNDP headquarters in New York and in the field include:
-Regional Coordinator of the African Futures Program (1997-2003) based in Abidjan serving more than 20 African countries;
-Chief, Office of the UNDP Assistant Administrator for Africa, based at UNDP Headquarters (1995-1997);
-Chief, UNDP Liaison Office in South Africa (1993-1995);
-Senior Adviser in the Bureau for Program Policy and Evaluation (1988-1993) of UNDP;
-Technical Adviser to CILSS (Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel) on Human Resources Development based in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) (1979-1986)
Alioune Sall research and teaching interests are in foresight studies, development planning and visioning, democratic transitions, governance, the politics of international economic relations, political economy of African countries.
Cultural studies are also part of his research and teaching interests particularly as he served as Special Adviser to President of Mali on issues of Arts, Culture and Heritage. Prior to that assignment, Alioune Sall played a lead role in the conceptualization and organization of the Conference of Intellectuals of Africa and the Diaspora held in Dakar (Senegal) in 2004 and Salvador de Bahia (Brazil) in 2006 which brought together more than 1000 intellectuals from the African continent and diasporic communities under the aegis of the African Union.
He is the author of several publications, including books and contributions to books, journal articles, book reviews, and consultancy reports. Prominent among them are; “Africa 2025: what Possible Futures for Sub-Saharan Africa?” and “The future Competitiveness of African Economies”
Alioune Sall has a vast experience in organizing major academic and policy-oriented events in various fields and can mobilize various networks at the continental level as well as individual countries.
Alioune Sall holds advanced degrees in Philosophy, Development studies and a PhD in Sociology.
