Susanne Schröter
Susanne Schröter has been professor at the Institute for Ethnology until Oct. 2023 and now holds a research professorship at the Goethe University Frankfurt. She is board member of the “German Orient Institute” and member of the Senate of the “German National Foundation” and on the scientific advisory board of the “Federal Center for Civic Education”, as well as in the Austrian Fund for the Documentation of Religiously Motivated Politics Extremism (Documentation Center Political Islam). She is also a member of the “Hessian Integration Conference”, the “Dialogue Forum Islam Hessia” and the “Polytechnic Society”. Appointed associate member of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco since 2022. In November 2014 she founded the “Frankfurt Research Center for Global Islam” (FFGI) and has been since then Director of the facility.
From 2008 to 2019 she was Principal Investigator in the Cluster of Excellence “Education normative orders”. Previously, she was Chair of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Passau (2004-2008). Between 2000 and 2004 she taught as a visiting professor at the Yale University, the universities of Mainz, Frankfurt and Trier and conducted research as a fellow at the University of Chicago.
Her research interests include: Islamism and jihadism; progressive and liberal Islam; women’s movements in the Islamic world; constructions of gender and sexuality; secularism and religion; refugees and integration; political, religious and ethnic Conflicts.
