CONCISE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MOROCCAN JUDAISM

The Concise Encyclopedia of Moroccan Judaism is envisioned as a reference work

devoted to Moroccan Judaism across the long durée, from antiquity to the present. It

will synthesize historical, religious, social, cultural, economic, linguistic, and memorial

knowledge about Moroccan Jewish communities for scholars, cultural institutions,

political organizations, educators, the wider public, and the Moroccan Jewish

diaspora. Its central aim is to treat Moroccan Judaism not as a marginal subfield nor

as a nostalgic archive but as a constituent dimension of Moroccan history and

Mediterranean Jewish civilization.

Projected as a 1,000-page volume including a detailed bibliography on Moroccan

Judaism, the encyclopedia will comprise alphabetically arranged entries on

individuals, places, themes, and events. These will include biographical entries on

rabbis, intellectuals, merchants, artists, physicians, diplomats, interpreters, women,

and communal leaders; geographical entries on cities, mellahs, holy sites, and rural

communities; thematic entries on law, ritual, institutions, social practices, migration,

and intercommunal relations; and cultural entries on music, cuisine, literature, visual

arts, costume, manuscripts, and ritual objects
